August 2019

Dear Parents,

Welcome back everyone!  What a beautiful summer we have had, and I hope that you enjoyed a wonderful holiday with your family. We are all very excited to be back.  Last year was a very successful academic year for our school, with high results in the areas of English, Math and French, particularly with the June exams.  Our mission statement is Inspiring Learners to Succeed, and we look forward to continuing this trend of success while fostering a sense of community and a love for learning with every student.

Staff Changes:  Madame Doucet is taking a sabbatical and Mme Sylvie has a new job as a French consultant with the school board for this year. Ms Lara and Mme Natalie have moved schools and we wish them well, and Kim in daycare is extending her learning by taking classes this fall.  We have a new K4 team of Jan Alisappi and Amy Frost.  Manon Roux will be replacing in Grade 1 and Monique Camirand will return to Grade 3.  Shannon Langlois comes to us from Queen E and will be teaching Grade 4. Welcome to Samantha Winsor who joins us to do Grade 2 ELA and resource. Welcome to Wakefield, we are so happy to have you on our team!  The team of aides this year working with our students will be Christine Redl and Sarah McGuire.  In daycare, our wonderful team is back:  Nancy, Samantha, Sarah, Nic and Michelle.  Samantha Gowan will be the daycare technician, and Linda Spallin and Michelle Labranche will be our office support staff.

First Day of School, August 29th:  Your child’s homeroom teacher will be calling or leaving a message to introduce themselves over the PD days so you will know who to look for on the first day of school.  When students arrive, they can meet their teachers on the field (or in the gym if the weather is rainy).  Teachers will have balloons with their grade level to identify themselves.  Parents are welcome to stay for the first half hour of the day to help your child settle in.  Please note that K4 and K5 students have a different schedule for the first few days of school and this information was mailed to you in mid-August.

Monday, September 2nd  is a holiday, school and daycare are closed.

Daycare:  The Daycare staff is excited to be working with your children this year, and Daycare is open on the first day of school.  They are working hard to develop exciting programs this year.  If you have any inquiries or need to contact the daycare, please call the school or email either or

New Timetable:  this year, we are introducing a second recess to our schedule and extending both to 20 minutes.  In order to accommodate the timing for buses, our school day is starting earlier.  Students are expected to be at school for 8:05am and the end of the day time remains the same with dismissal from 2:40-2:50pm.  Please note the changes on the school website.

Meet the Teacher night, Thursday September 26th, 5:00-7:00pm:   This is an opportunity to meet the staff in the school setting and ask questions about school and the curriculum in general.  Details to follow.

School Driveways:  It is very important to understand where buses and parents are able to drive around the areas of the school.  The bus zone is at the front of the school and parents are not able to park there between 7:45am-9:00am and 2:00-4:30pm.  The north side lane at the side of the school is a ONE WAY coming from Sully Road.  You cannot turn and drive up the lane from Riverside Drive.  If you are dropping off your child, please park on the left side of the lane closest to the school to be as safe as possible.  Drive on the right side.  Please respect the direction of the traffic for everyone’s safety.

The sidewalk project should be completed in September.  It will connect the pedestrian walkway coming from Elmdale to the trail and sidewalk in front of the school.  It will make crossing the driveway area into the school safer.

Student Agenda:  Your child will be receiving their new agenda on the first day of school.  Please take the time to review the first 8 pages of the agenda for important information about the school.

Website:  Our school website has a lot of information about the school that you may find useful.  Please visit at

Please feel free to contact the school should you have any questions or concerns.   We want every child to have a positive start to the school year.  On behalf of the staff at Wakefield School, we are all looking forward to seeing you soon.
